Rainbows End could be described as the ‘thrill capital’ of Auckland for families and young people. New Zealand’s largest theme park promises all the thrills you can handle with a host of fun activities and world class rides. There is something for everyone, spin vertically, horizontally suspended 18m high on the Power Surge, be trapped in a runaway mine cart and Fear Fall 18 storeys at 82km/hr! Try the interactive 3D virtual theatre experience or for the littlies lots of fun rides in Castle Land. Defy gravity on New Zealand’s only corkscrew roller coaster or ride the Log Flume with its dramatic water chute plunge. It’s also a fantastic birthday party venue and you can choose from a variety of packages.
If you have children with you or simply a kid at heart yourself, you’ll love Butterfly Creek! You can see giant Australian crocodiles, a dazzling array of live butterflies from around the globe or come up close with your favourite farm animals at Buttermilk Farm. There are miniature train rides available with the ‘Red Admiral Express’ and a fantastic play park full of every type of contraption kids love to crawl over, in, around or through. Butterfly Creek covers the entire array for kids from the thrill of seeing live reptiles feed to cuddling fluffy goats.
The park sits on ash-covered lava flows from Mangere Mountain and has views across the harbour to the Manukau Heads and Waitakere Ranges. It takes its name from the Ambury Milk Company, which milked cows and ran a town milk supply farm here from 1893-1965. Farm animals at Ambury are family favourites. You will see sheep, goats, cows, pigs, pet lambs (in spring), chickens, turkeys, rabbits and peacocks.
The park's Manukau foreshore and the foreshore on Kiwi Esplanade host a range of bird species. Year-round inhabitants include pied stilts and royal spoonbills, and in autumn large flocks of migratory birds from the South Island (e.g. wrybills and pied oyster catchers) can be seen. Bar-tailed godwits and knots migrate to the harbour for the summer from Siberia and Alaska.
